Jan 30, 2013 —Re-downloading app store files for Mac
One day during holidays, I was in a jam session with my brother and nephews. We played some music and we made a few videos. I played guitar, my brother played bass, and his nephews played keyboards and drums. I just ended up using my phone so they are not great sound quality. Either way, I wanted to put a few of them on youTube. So, I had a need to do some light editing and started wondering which software would be the easiest for me to use.
After doing some quick investigating, I decided to download a piece of software called iMovie from the app store. I think it was like $15 or something.
Anyway, since this is from a central repository from the app store, it is very different form just downloading it to the “download folder” or the “desktop”. It goes to a place of mystery where the source is kept once it goes on to my computer.
No big deal when everything works well, however, I ended up being at one of my favorite places, Starbucks. And, of course, their internet SUCKS! However, the coffee is great, people are great and atmosphere is very nice.
Anyway, so I had a problem with the download becoming corrupted and in-fact it said “ERROR” in red and looked very scary. So, I was thinking, “where the hell is the file so I can just delete it and re-download when I get to a GOOD connection after I fill myself with coffee.”
Here is what I did. Note: this is for the Mac Mountain Lion and not sure if it would work in Lion or Snow Leopard.
Sign out of the App Store.
Open up the terminal and type in:
$defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true
Then open App Store and sign in. In the menu bar on top, look for Debug and Enable Debug Menu should be checked.
To get the file, just click on go to download folder.
From there, find the file you downloaded and just delete it.
I am not shouting, but JUST BE CAREFUL TO DELETE ONLY THAT FILE YOU DOWNLOADED :-)
When you restart the App Store, and go to downloads, the button will not be greyed out anymore. You should be able to re-download the file and this time without errors.
Hope it works out for you.
have a good day :-)
